![]() While Flume does not tell you where a leak might be, by looking at the water flows early in the morning we were able to see a very consistent and large on/off water flow resembling a square wave. The ah-ha moment occurred when I realized it was the response of the pool refill valve as the valve float mechanism turned the valve on and off, like a toilet refill mechanism only much larger.Īfter performing some tests, and 1000’s of gallons later, it was confirmed it was the pool. Since the water leak was under the in-ground pool it was not noticed. Furthermore, the noise of the pool pump prevents people from hearing anything. It was an engineering project driven by the drought conditions in California. They then formed a company to market the product. ![]() ![]() At a Florida Condominium, where I am an owner, we had been trying to determine why our water bills had been so large. After other owners attempted to take 1 minute videos of the spinning water meter in the early hours to determine the magnitude of the problem, I found a device called Flume 2.įlume 2 is a simple device that straps onto the existing water meter (see image below) It piggybacks onto the water meter and reads the magnetic pulses the water meter sends out. The data is then sent to a bridge receiver which is connected to the internet for display on the Flume app. The device cost $149 when I purchased it a few weeks ago. Flume allows me to read real time water flow at the condo even while I am in Boston.Įven more interesting is the concept for the device came from some young mechanical engineers at San Luis Obispo Polytechnic.
